San Francisco Presidio Tunnel Tops
Year completed: 2022
Presidio Tunnel Tops is a new 14-acre park destination where visitors connect with nature, where kids play and grow, and where all are inspired by 360-degree views that were never before possible. The opportunity presented itself in 1993 with the replacement of a seismically unsafe section of Highway 101 which put portions of the new highway in cut and cover tunnels. This provided a canvas to create a brand-new landscape spanning the tunnels and connecting the historic Main Post to Crissy Field and the waterfront. Hundreds of hours of community engagement with more than 10,000 participants helped shape the final design of the site. The realization of this project is due to a partnership between Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
