Highland Hospital Acute Tower Replacement

Year completed: 2020

The Acute Tower Replacement Project re-envisioned the layout of the urban hospital campus to culminate in a 1-acre urban park in the center of the property reminiscent of the historic central quadrangle. The medical center expansion includes a 255,500 SF Acute Care Replacement Tower, a 72,000 s.f. Satellite building (ambulatory care clinic) and a new front entry connecting corridors to the clinic area and the patient tower. The new buildings achieved LEED Gold certification.

ReScape Landscape Highlights

  • By using approximately 100 cubic yards of organic compost to provide food and nutrients to the plants, this project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 45 metric tons. This is equivalent to taking up to 9.6 passenger cars off the road for one year.

  • The courtyard captures and filters over 85% of the average annual storm water directing it through the soil by using a flow-through planter, large planting areas, and permeable paving.

  • The courtyard includes nearly 40 different plant species, 90% low water, and 54% native species providing food, water, and shelter for local birds, butterflies, beneficial insects, and other wildlife.
